family life: A Mad Hatter’s Tea Party for Summer

A seed was planted to have a tea party years ago when my dearly beloved Grandma Lois passed away and I inherited a set of nine lovely tea cups with matching saucers. Summer was just a baby at the time of her passing, but I thought it would be perfect to one day have some of her little friends over for tea and finger sandwiches. Well, the years flew by and suddenly Summer was turning twelve!!
One afternoon a couple of months ago, I took the kids to see the movie Alice in Wonderland and we loved it! It was during the movie that I was inspired to finally have that tea party. I thought I should tell Summer about my exciting plans, but they were met with reluctance. She was worried it might be too childish. WHAT?!? So I decided that she was going to have this tea party now or never and that was all there was to it!! Because my little baby girl will be a teenager NEXT YEAR and goodness knows what is in store for the future.
The day that I took Summer shopping for invitations she became excited about the party. Thankfully! It was such a pleasure planning this party for Summer and her friends and such a joy seeing it come together. I know my Grandma Lois would have been thrilled that her tea cups were so adored and appreciated!!

Mary - Great party!! I would love to know how you made your tissue paper flowers!

September 22, 2010 - 9:11 pm

daria - Hello Mary, happy you liked it! Tissue paper flowers are super easy! Simply make a stack of 5-10 sheets of tissue paper and fold it like an accordian. Take a fuzzy pipe cleaner and wrap it tightly around the center of the accordian. Then using sharp scissors round the ends. Next pull each piece of tissue from the edge up towards the center. Feel free to play with it and each one comes out a very unique and lovely flower. I think I found directions with illustrations on martha stewart’s website. Have fun with it!!

September 26, 2010 - 5:53 pm

Mary - Thanks Daria!! I’ll be using those for my daughter’s party in two weeks! :-)

September 28, 2010 - 11:13 am

Lisa Lyons - I love all your beautiful creations for the Alice in Wonderland party! Where did you find the felt bags you used for goodie bags?

September 28, 2010 - 1:55 pm

daria - Hello Lisa, Thanks for your kind words. I found the bags for $1 each at the Christmas Tree Shop, as well as the pretty tissue paper that I used for the bags and for some of the flowers. The goody bags contained a little tea cup, saucer and a box of tea that I found at the same shop. Each goody bag was about $6 total.

So, if it’s not too late, it’s super easy to make the flowers! Martha Stewart has simple instructions. You can find them here http://www.marthastewart.com/how-to/tissue-paper-pom-poms-how-to
Have fun and thanks for the nice compliment! :)
